I smoked for 35 years – a little less than a pack a day. At age 50, the cost wen t from silly to ridiculous with extra taxes. I decided to quit. That lasted abou t 3 months and then I was back at it. One day I calculated I'd spent the cash price of a brand new Honda Accord on cigarettes during my lifetime and that went from ridiculous to just plain stupid. I decided to quit. This time, rather than cold turkey, I make a few rules. Rule #1 – no smoking ever indoors – office or home. That cut my consumption in half immedi ately. And from half a pack a day to nothing was not easy but it was a lot easie r than from a full pack to nothing. As others have said, YOU CAN DO IT… but you've got to really want to. Ot herwise forget trying to quit. With these new “collectable” packages, start a card swap club with your dying friends like you did with baseball/hockey cards… might as well have some fun on your way out.

Although I support that anti-smoking idea being take n here, Im also with the others. This does nothing and means nothing for smokers . It wont make them more likely to quit. The best course of action I think needs to be taken is keep jacking up the price more and more. I know people still buy them, but for young people (such as teenagers) it makes it unaffordable for the m, and therefore forces them to cut back, or cut the habit altogether before it becomes an addiction.

Dear Non-Smokers: While it's well and good for you to want to ban cigarettes, or refuse smokers the free healthcare system of Canada, chew on this for a whil e – who do you think funds the most of it, by purchasing cigarettes? Cigarettes, as we all kno w, are taxed heavily – and the government loves those tax dollars. As others have said, I woul d like to see some type of warning label on alcohol as well – what it does to one's liver if it's abused, horrible crashes resulting from drinking and driving, etc. (The warning labels on cigarettes by the way are completely ignored and a waste of time, btw) – but if you're going to target cigarettes, you bet ter target alcohol too – they're both addictive substances, and deserve equal attention.

Choose you r poison. Mine is smoking. Other people will choose liquor, drugs or foods to cu rb their cravings. I don't drink, do drugs and I watch my diet and exercise regularly. Ez my choice. Some people will operate vehicles when their faculties are deminishe d because of their poisons. The problem with kicking s mokers off the health care system (as some posters are suggesting) is that it's a knee-jerk re action that begs the question, where do we stop? We'll have to also kick out the drinkers, the drug addicts, those who eat too many hamburgers, too few vegetables, don't comply with doctor's orders, rec kless drivers, skydivers, etc etc etc. Our health care system doesn't work that way, and if we want to start picking and choosing who we cover we will soon look like the USA. As a smoker I can honestly tell you that any changes made to th e packages will have little or no effect on me,or any other smoker,yeah I know i ts bad for me,but I look at alot of ppl I know,who have quit smoking only to see them develop asthma,or COPD,.Why doesn't the government spend the money on more useful thi ngs,like health care,education,job training,no they'd rather waste it on mediocre bsI seriou sly get ticked off at ppl who have never smoked a day in their lives,telling me to quit..mind your own business,I agree with 1 person on here..starting putting graphic pictures on alcohol bottles of car wrecks,I see more and more ppl in thi s country dying from fatal accidents due to drinking and driving than someone sm oking a cigarette…your priorities are in the wrong place.

My m other smoked two packs a day of Kool or Craven A. She said she would quit when c igarettes reached a dollar. Her five children went without milk or bread but not a day went by that she went without her addiction. The only way she quit was af ter she died.Emphyzema and tubes throughout the house weren'ta deterrent either. I doubt pict ures would have helped.I've never and will never smoke and people that do, Just Don't Get It. And won't.Let them have our health care suffer because of it. Keith is ab solutely right! As an ex-smoker, i was only able to quit because of my will powe r. I tried patches, gum with no luck. I started tracking how and when my craving s occured, and began noticing how nicotine warped my decisions. I was able to qu it, and after 3 months, and still to this day, i have not had a single craving. Tobacco used to be grown in rotation with hemp, because tobacco depletes the soi ls nutrients where as hemp would replenish them. After hemp was banned, new chem icals had to be developped to grow tobacco, and that is the problem. We're poisoning an alread y poisonous plant. FORCE ALL TOBACCO GROWERS TO USE ORGANIC INPUTS. Growing cost s would go up because yields would go down.

The picture is not graphic at all. This i s what reality looks like and it is what you see when you walk through a cancer ward. People that were once so vibrant reduced to shells of themselves. An accur ate depiction of the truth. The graphics are a great idea, the price of cigarett es should rise to make it unaffordable(including on Indian Reserves) and insuran ce premiums should increase for people who choose not to look after themselves.
I agree that it has to be a self motivated cessation, however, now more than eve r, there are so many aids, medications, organizations that can help stop any add iction known to man. In the past five years I have noted a significant decrease of smokers. Smoking and all addictions are a choice.
If people chose to look afte r themselves, healthcare would not have the depth of burdens that it has today.

My mother has smoked for close to 50 years, these warnings do absolutely nothing to deter her from smoking, she even comments on them while she's smoking. Her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer (survived it) and that didn't make her stop either. I've never smoked and nev er will. The stench is what turns me off of it, not the warnings.

I quit because I thought i t might help me feel better. In actaul fact all I did was gain weight and get hi gh blood pressure. Not sure whether I'd rather die of cancer of a heart attack, although the h eart attack would probably be quicker and less messy. If the government seriousl y wants the citizenry to quit, stop selling them, make them illegal. Non Smokers that blame Smokers for all these problems , need to take a look at the big picture of the smoking issue and put the blame where it needs to be. I have believed for years that the chemicals that they add to tobbacco, is the reason why it is so addictive. The addictiveness is the num ber one reason why people can't quit. Back in the 1950′s to the 1970′s, the Government was heavly invovled in supplying gr ants to Tobbacco Farmers and possibly research for the tobbacco companies. The G overnment has started this problem and they need to force the tobacco companies to remove all chemicals from tobacco products, if they are serious about helping people quit. I hope that your reseachers at ctv will help me prove this matter and we can get to the heart of the problem to start helping people quit smoking. These adds on the cartons and packages do nothing to make anyone quit and they are a waste of tax payers money.

I think th e root of the problem are the young teens in high school that pick up the smokin g habit. I am a grade 12 student (never smoked) and each year the number of high school students I see smoking has increased. I think the government should focu s on teens that smoke. They should tighten up rules and laws and make sure minor s can't get their hands on cigarettes. These Ǯ and 15 year old teens who start to smoke don't fully underst and the consequences that come with it. More effort should be put in preventing distribution of cigarettes to minors. That way when they are older and their bra in is fully developed then they can make the decision to smoke or not, rather th an getting addicted to them at the age of 14.

And I know! I do surgery everyday. Smokers cannot “TRY” to quit they must psyche thems elves up then decide to become a “NON SMOKER”. I quit cold turkey in 1984 after smoking 11/2 packs a day for almost 18 years. It was the best decision I ever made and I am so glad I did. S moking today is socially unacceptable and a serious health risk. Are these new laws applicable to all tobacco produc ts sold anywhere in this country? What about tobacco products sold on aboriginal reserves? Will they be subject to the same rules (as far as warnings on packagi ng)? That has been a problem, as many aborigninal people feel like they are not subject to the laws of Canada, as their treaty rights give them the right to “self-government”, and that inc ludes the right to sell tobacco products to anyone, at a price to be determined by the aboriginals, themselves, and in whatever packaging they determine. There is no mention in the article about this issue.

It's nice that your taking all these intia tives to make people live longer. The problem here – now that they are living longer they have no resources and healthcare programs in place to look after all these people. Y ou live longer so you can be stuck in old age homes away from the rest of the wo rld in poor conditions with poor health care. Oh Joy!! There is no quality of li fe left once you get to that point. I would rather die in my own home happy when I can no longer have a good quality of life than be kept alive for years starin g at four walls day in and day out in a nursing home. Put the money where it is really needed. You can't look after the elderly in this country properly now. OMG Smoking is Bad for Me!!!! I didn't know! Come on people the images on the packages do nothing but start c onversations among smokers huddled together for warmth in the cold winter. I qui t smoking a year ago and I did it so that I would live to watch my 2 year old gr ow up, not because the warning labels scared me. Rather than increasing the amou nt of money spent on packaging, reduce it, make them soft packs rather than card board and use unbleached uncoloured paper with simply the Brand Name and “flavour”. So rather than a colourf ul pack it is simply a plain brown wrapper around the cigarettes, that will redu ce the environmental impact of all the discarded packages and further make brand ing and promoting any particular company that much more difficult.

These labels won't do a dam thing to prev ent smoking because the government has no credibility on the subject of drug abu se. They have lied for over 30 years about the harmful effects of marijuana to 3 -4 generations of kids telling them it's a gateway drug to the most serious drugs like heroin, cocaine, crystal meth, etc. When the kids try pot the majority of them never tr y the harder drugs but they do drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. I'm not so sure that warning labels will stop heavy smokers, but at least they won't cost the taxpa yers any money. I guess if it stops some, then it is a good thing. Maybe telling smokers that they stink badly, and that they age and wrinkle much faster, would do the trick. Those that call on banning cigarettes are likely the same people that would whine and complain that the Government is being “dictitorial”, as the usual Harper haters constan tly do. Smoking is a filthy habit, which I once indulged in, but gave it up many years ago. My husband also gave it up many years ago, but that didn't stop him from getting b ladder cancer, which the Dr said was caused by smoking. Fortunatly his treatment s worked.

I've suggested in the past that t hey raise the minimum age for buying cigarettes by a year every year to help kee p the youths off cigarettes. But this idea has been met with anger by many reade rs. Fact is, we can save billions in health ca re costs and save thousands of lives if we got rid of cigarettes. I am a smoker and agree – smoking is no good for you.I quit for six months and gained 55 pounds – so I had my choice – get obese or quit smoking. Either way, I sh ortened my life.One solution – ban cigarettes in the country. Then raise the GST to cover the money shortfall from the hidden tax and make every Canadian pay their fair shair e of taxes, to cover all our social programs. Eliminate grants to all groups tha t lobby against smoking. These groups will not be needed. Use that monies toward s other programs that help Canadians – reduction of harmful emissions, etc.We will then see ho w these people will react to higher taxes, etc.

It's like the taxes that have been put on tobacco products. It isn't going matter what is put on cigarette packaging. There are going to be people who will choose to buy and smoke tobacco products, including children. Banning tobacco products isn't going do the trick either – some smokers are g oing to smoke no matter what. Neither has education.

Cigarettes are taxed before sale to the publi c and then taxed again at point of sale. The drugs purchased over the counter to assist in quiting are taxed. NOW, drugs are illegal, but both prescription and illegal drug users can get rehab to quit their habit numerous times at the expen se of the public taxpayer, while no money is collected on these products, except for the pharmaceutical manufacturers and retailers for prescriptions. WHY are c igarettes legal and highly taxed but the smokers unable to get into rehab to qui t and get good counselling since staying at home and quitting on one's own is impossible. Chil dren still suffer in second hand smoke in the home and in the car as parents don't always smok e outside and in the car when the children are not in it. Medical marijuana can be smoked in rental units but not ordinary cigarettes, the fumes enter the hallw ays and other apartments where there are children and people with medical proble ms. When the marijuana users move the units do not get fumigated to the point of replacing the walls, ceilings and floors that have absorbed the smoke. There is something dangerously wrong with government thinking, they want the money from taxes and can do so legally with the cigarette smoker but flatly refuse to assis t them to quit and they are the cause of the problem by not making it illegal. T obacco used in native ceremonies should be accounted for and not sold to the peo ple for personal use. This is their culture and should be respected. Then all of the Canadian population would be equal.

I smoked for 20 years, and am now al most 5 years quit. During the time I was smoking, the gov't INTRODUCED these graphic warning p ackages. We smokers just tuned 'em out. It doesn't have any effect whatsoever. The gov't should save its money and just co llect the taxes. On the subject of how to get people to quit, a person has to WA NT to quit, and no gov't is going to easily change a person's mind.

In Quebec the government has found millions of dollars to help women get pregnant through IVF at $15,000 a try and will pay for 3 tries. This is for all Quebec women regardless of their financial status.
Why don't they find some money to set up f ree bilingual smoke cessation clinics where smokers could get help with their ad diction along with the tools necessary, ie Nicorettes, patches, etc. to help t hem stop.
Smokers can be a drain on Medicare as are those who live unhealthy lif e-styles and suffer from, among other things, obesity, high blood pressure, diab etes, high cholesterol, heart problems, etc. but, with holier than thou attitude s, don't smoke so feel quite righteous.
Additionally, cigarettes are a cash cow and continue t o generate a lot of tax money which the Government is unwilling to give up.
As f or banning smoking, prohibition didn't work so well in the US except for the money made by Can adian Whiskey Barons who continued, throughout Prohibition, to provide Americans with their drink of choice. This time the Americans would be the beneficiaries as cheaper cigarettes would follow the same route as illegal whiskey did and we would be greatly helping their economy.

I'm not a smoker so I think that I'm reasonably objective when I say that the Anti-smoking groups are really “anti-smoker”. People who smoke have been mar ginalized, isolated, condemned, banned to the street, legislated, taxed and puni shed under the banner of protecting health. In Ontario, they're not even allowed to have a roo f over their heads when they go outside to smoke. Allowing them a little creatur e comfort apparently might encourage their disgusting habit. Smokers are not cri minals, they are victims of an insidious industry that managed to get them hooke d on a poisonous product. If we treated drug addicts, alcoholics or people with AIDS in the same manner then the human rights advocates would justifiably be scr eaming bloody murder. Nicotine addiction is not a character flaw. It is a physic al and mental addiction every bit as real as an addiction to heroin and just as difficult to overcome. Instead of printing stupid pictures on packages and punis hing smokers with crippling taxes, our governments should be offering real help to quit by providing proven effective smoking cessation products and extensive s upport programs at no cost. The punitive approach is not only ineffective, it is inhumane. There seems to be plenty of money to bail out tobacco farmers who hav e been complicit in supplying their poison to the market so how about a few doll ars and a little compassion to provide real help to their victims?

Maybe the government should introduce “Cigarette Registration”. They kill more people than guns. (just takes longer) All users must be registered and show a photo I.D. card to obtain a pack. e-cigarettes are the answer here folks. I successfully quit smoking using those things, and stopped using e- cis as well. 1yr on Jan 4th. The gov could of looked into getting resale rights for ecigs and making their own e-liquid. They collect the tax on it, you use ap roduct that you can trust more then china-branded liquids, and you stop smoking those cancer sticks. Everyone wins.
