He was dumbfounded. His eyes just looked at his hand outstretched.

We've had K2 meter responses to our questions — again, the lights light up whenever energy's detected. Also, a flashlight came on by itself. It was about 10 feet away from the investigators. And it just turned on and off.

The place has an upstairs to it and we had a camera set up there with a K2 meter. And I have this on video — we were upstairs for like an hour and everybody left the room and it showed 15 minutes of nobody being in the room. And as we're coming back up the steps, you could hear footsteps and the K2 meter stated to light up — it was going crazy. It wasn'ta vibration, because we went back down the steps later and tried jumping up and down to see if it was the weight of people coming up that caused a vibration. But there was no vibration. It was almost like something knew that we were coming up the steps — they were either excited or thought, oh, no, here they come again, one of those deals. I don't know why it happened.

Question : Have you ever conducted an investigation in Indiana County?

Answer: No, but we'd like to. It would really be nice to get a call from someone there. We go more or less where we're invited. “Joe X” says, “Oh, yeah, I saw something in my house or in my business, would you come out here?” Then we'd be more than happy. Question: Do you know of any haunted sites in Indiana County?

Answer: The Jimmy Stewart Museum is said to be haunted by the spirit of Jimmy Stewart. I don't know much about it. The IUP campus reportedly has haunted sites — I'm not sure which buildings. There's reportedly a ghost of a child that drowned in a pool there. There's a bridge called Allen Bridge — reportedly a ghost of a lady in white has been seen there. And I've heard that a female in maybe 18th century clothing has been seen in Oakland Cemetery.

Question: Can you talk about some other reportedly haunted sites in Westmoreland County?

Graphic design class to kick off

TEMECULA —- The Temecula Public Library will offer graphic design classes from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on five consecutive Thursdays starting this week.

Tony Moramarco, Creative Director for Bigfoot conference call Designs will be the instructor for the series, which is a unique opportunity for students 18 and older to work on functional graphic design projects. A small class environment will allow each student plenty of individual time with the instructor to troubleshoot problems and ask questions.

Lecture series focuses on war

HEMET —- The next installment of a monthly series of talks about war and culture will be held Thursday at the Western Science Center.

With conflicts throughout the globe, presenters will focus on the effects war has on our society.

This month's lecture, “Embedded Anthropologists: Does Academic Research become the Victim of War?,” will focus on how the acts and data of embedded anthropologists in military units should be considered within the context of academic research.

“Rights and Liberties: Victims of War?” is scheduled for Nov. 18 and “Go To War. Destroy the Past” will be featured Dec. 2.

Volunteers to gather, fill shoe boxes

WINCHESTER —- The Community Church of the Valley Temecula congregation will gather at Abelia Park for a Faith in Action Day from 9 am to noon Oct. 24.

A pancake breakfast will be served for all participants, who will help stuff 500 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, a project that is a part of the Samaritan's Purse effort, led by Franklin Graham. The boxes are sent to needy children around the world.

Items still needed for the boxes are school supplies, small toys, hygiene items, hard candies, gum, T-shirts, socks, baseball caps, sunglasses, hair accessories, toy jewelry, watches and flashlights.

Participants are encouraged to bring filled shoe boxes, donate items to fill shoe boxes or help with putting them together.

A mini car show by the Temecula Corvette Club also will be featured at the event.

TEMECULA —- The city of Temecula will host a Halloween Family Carnival on Oct. 29.

This old-fashioned family carnival, which will run from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, will feature costume and screaming contests, along with goodies for the kids, carnival games, face painting, a tattoo artist, fun jumps and food vendors.

Eight new queens crowned at pageant

TEMECULA —- The Miss Inland California Scholarship Pageant recently crowned eight new queens last month.

The pageant is conducted annually by Southwest California Pageant and is open to girls and unmarried women up to age 21 who live in the Riverside and San Bernardino counties. This year's pageant was held at Temeku Hills Country Club in Temecula on Sept. 26.

Jenna Frazier of Murrieta has been crowned Miss Inland California.

Also included in the Inland California Court for 2011 are: Teen Miss Ta'Merah Barnes of Menifee, Jr. Teen Miss Lana Brannon of Wildomar and Pre-Teen Miss Kailee Miller of Winchester.

The evening pageant began with an opening dance number and progressed to sportswear and evening gown competitions, followed by an on-stage question.

These segments, in addition to personal interviews conducted earlier in the day, determined who would be selected as Inland California Queens for the coming year.

Also conducted earlier in the day was the children's pageant, which crowned an additional four queens including: Junior Miss Brittney Baker of Wildomar, Little Miss Brooklyn Phillips of Temecula, Pixie Miss Alexis Mena of Perris and Petite Miss Jovie Valenzuela of Lake Elsinore.

During their reign, the queens will be attending community functions, Chamber of Commerce mixers, grand openings and parades, as well as philanthropic and charitable functions.

The Ferguson-Florissant School District's Board of Education recently rolled back the property tax rate. The new rate fulfills a commitment to turn back property tax rates after the passage of Proposition A in August.

The combined tax rate is $4.6997, down slightly from $4.7068 set in 2009.

The numbers reflect a blended tax rate for residential, commercial, agricultural and personal property.

City will seek low bid for sewer line inspections

Florissant will seek the lowest bid for the video inspection of residential sewer pipelines as part of the Sanitary Lateral Insurance Program (SLIP).

Residents will pay the initial fee for the video inspection, then be reimbursed up to $300 by the city.

SLIP covers the cost of defective sewer laterals which run from a residence to the main sewer line. Property owners pay an annual $50 fee. The homeowner is responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement of the sewer laterals inside the home or within five feet of the dwelling.

Police, Masons offer MoCHIP identification session

The Hazelwood Police Department is partnering with Bridgeton Masonic Lodge 80 in hosting its second Missouri Child Identification and Protection Program (MoCHIP).

The free program is set for 9 am to 3 pm Saturday at the Bommarito Honda Superstore of Hazelwood, 330 Brookes Drive, along the outer road near Interstate 270 and Lindbergh Boulevard. The superstore is located next to the Bigfoot conference call monster truck.

The program is for newborns to adults. Trained personnel will offer a special booth for autistic children. Parents of children with Down Syndrome are encouraged to participate. Adults who may have dementia may participate.

The participants' physical features, as well as scanned fingerprints and digital photos, will be burned on a mini-compact disc. Two laminated ID cards, full dental impressions, other noninvasive DNA sampling, and instructions for an emergency will be included in the sealed envelope. This entire process takes less than 20 minutes.

Council passes tax rates for 2010

The Overland residential and personal property taxes will remain the same for 2010 with a slight rise in commercial taxes.

Residential taxes will be 6.8 cents per $100 assessed value, with commercial at 8.4 cents and residential at 9.7 cents. The commercial rate is up by .3 cents.

The city council passed the tax rate at its Sept. 27 meeting.

Council approves budget to buy new police cars

Overland will purchase four new police cars as part of its annual vehicle rotation.

At it Sept. 27 meeting, the city council approved $73,092 for the purchase of four 2011 Chevrolet Impalas. The city is participating in a program where Missouri does all of the bidding for the state's police departments.

The new police cars will include special renovations for its engines, electric and suspension systems.

The older vehicles are rotated after running up about 70,000 miles.

The city will sell or trade the four older cars to companies who will convert them into taxi cabs.

Ritenour School District

Residential, commercial tax rates will increase

The Ritenour School District 2010 residential and commercial tax rates will increase while personal property taxes will decrease.

The tax levy adjustment will mean an increase of about $6 per month for a Ritenour home valued at $100,000.

The residential real estate is $4.62, an increase of 35 cents. Commercial real estate is $4.88, up 26 cents. Personal property taxes are $4.91, down by 5 cents.

The board of education set the new tax rate at a special Sept. 27 meeting.

Former Ritenour High principal, administrator dies

George Chapman, 85, former Ritenour High School principal and district administrator, died Sept. 29 after a very short illness. He had suffered from cancer. Chapman was fondly known as “Mr. Ritenour” because of his lifelong commitment to the Ritenour School District. He was a first-grader at Marvin Elementary in 1931 and a 1943 Ritenour High graduate.

He served in World War II before returning to the area. Chapman became an assistant principal at Ritenour High School in 1958. He was the principal from 1960 to 1967, then worked in a district administrative position until his retirement in 1982.

Chapman lived in the district for most of his life with his late wife, Doris, and their three children.

Community college district increases property tax

The 2010 tax rate for the St. Louis Community College district will be increased from 21.36 cents to 21.79 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

The STLCC Board of Trustees recently voted for the increase in accordance with state laws.

The tax rate is based on the assessed valuation of property in the community college district, which includes St. Louis city and county and portions of Franklin and Jefferson counties.

The 21.79 cent property tax rate will generate nearly $62.8 million for the college, up from $62.1 million last year.

Residential, commercial tax rates will increase

The Ritenour School District 2010 residential and commercial tax rates will increase while personal property taxes will decrease.

The tax levy adjustment will mean an increase of about $6 per month for a Ritenour home valued at $100,000.

The residential real estate is $4.62, an increase of 35 cents. Commercial real estate is $4.88, up 26 cents. Personal property taxes are $4.91, down by 5 cents.

The board of education set the new tax rate at a special Sept. 27 meeting.

Former Ritenour High principal, administrator dies

George Chapman, 85, former Ritenour High School principal and district administrator, died Sept. 29 after a very short illness. He had suffered from cancer. Chapman was fondly known as “Mr. Ritenour” because of his lifelong commitment to the Ritenour School District. He was a first-grader at Marvin Elementary in 1931 and a 1943 Ritenour High graduate.

He served in World War II before returning to the area. Chapman became an assistant principal at Ritenour High School in 1958. He was the principal from 1960 to 1967, then worked in a district administrative position until his retirement in 1982.

Chapman lived in the district for most of his life with his late wife, Doris, and their three children.

Dr. Douglas Allen Katsev – Class of 1977; ophthalmic surgeon.

Grubbs Family (Lifetime Achievement Award) – founding family of Ritenour wrestling program.

St. Louis Community College

Community college district increases property tax

The 2010 tax rate for the St. Louis Community College district will be increased from 21.36 cents to 21.79 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

The STLCC Board of Trustees recently voted for the increase in accordance with state laws.

The tax rate is based on the assessed valuation of property in the community college district, which includes St. Louis city and county and portions of Franklin and Jefferson counties.

The 21.79 cent property tax rate will generate nearly $62.8 million for the college, up from $62.1 million last year.

Ferguson-Florissant School District

District rolls back property tax rate

The Ferguson-Florissant School District's Board of Education recently rolled back the property tax rate. The new rate fulfills a commitment to turn back property tax rates after the passage of Proposition A in August.

The combined tax rate is $4.6997, down slightly from $4.7068 set in 2009.

The numbers reflect a blended tax rate for residential, commercial, agricultural and personal property.

Florissant

City will seek low bid for sewer line inspections

Florissant will seek the lowest bid for the video inspection of residential sewer pipelines as part of the Sanitary Lateral Insurance Program (SLIP).

Residents will pay the initial fee for the video inspection, then be reimbursed up to $300 by the city.

SLIP covers the cost of defective sewer laterals which run from a residence to the main sewer line. Property owners pay an annual $50 fee. The homeowner is responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement of the sewer laterals inside the home or within five feet of the dwelling.

Hazelwood

Police, Masons offer MoCHIP identification session

The Hazelwood Police Department is partnering with Bridgeton Masonic Lodge 80 in hosting its second Missouri Child Identification and Protection Program (MoCHIP).

The free program is set for 9 am to 3 pm Saturday at the Bommarito Honda Superstore of Hazelwood, 330 Brookes Drive, along the outer road near Interstate 270 and Lindbergh Boulevard. The superstore is located next to the Bigfoot conference call monster truck.

The program is for newborns to adults. Trained personnel will offer a special booth for autistic children. Parents of children with Down Syndrome are encouraged to participate. Adults who may have dementia may participate.

The participants' physical features, as well as scanned fingerprints and digital photos, will be burned on a mini-compact disc. Two laminated ID cards, full dental impressions, other noninvasive DNA sampling, and instructions for an emergency will be included in the sealed envelope. This entire process takes less than 20 minutes.

Council passes tax rates for 2010

The Overland residential and personal property taxes will remain the same for 2010 with a slight rise in commercial taxes.

Residential taxes will be 6.8 cents per $100 assessed value, with commercial at 8.4 cents and residential at 9.7 cents. The commercial rate is up by .3 cents.

The city council passed the tax rate at its Sept. 27 meeting.
