During a recent forum there, Ambler told the crowd, “I have a proven record of getting the jo b done.” Norman described himself as “the one true conservative in this race.”
There are those who say the two never shoul d have faced off, that Norman could have run for the house or that Ambler jumped the gun by going after a prize that party leaders wanted for Norman.
Harrison h as heard such talk and he finds it unfortunate. “One thing I don't like is the idea there seems to be, with so many of these races, that someone can pick their successor,” he said. “That's not what people want.”
Crist, now running for county co mmission, chalks Norman's move up to ambition. “Jim has wanted to run for the Senate for as long as I can re member,” he said, adding that “Jim has a very good chance of being Senate president, and not a good chance o f being speaker of the house.”
That's because the next house speaker will likely be Wesley Chapel's Will Weatherford, he said, and the one after that will be chosen from outside Tampa Bay.
Both carry baggage
Ads for Norman are positive and negative: a photo of ex-governor Jeb Bu sh standing next to Norman, a television ad depicting Ambler as a raging liberal .
The most biting of them have come from the special-interest Florida First Init iative, which makes the case that Ambler is not a true conservative.
Ambler, mea nwhile, contends that Norman is poorly qualified for state government. In an int erview, he said that jumping from the county commission to the Senate would be l ike a lifetime baseball player going out for football.
“They don't translate,” he said. “He works with six other county commissioners w ho are not even allowed to talk to each other.” The theme carries through Ambler's billboards. “Not just experience… the right experienc e,” they proclaim.
Behind the scenes, there are whisper campaigns to exploit both men's vulnerabilities.
Nor man’s record includes a trip to Las Vegas as the guest of a man who did business with Tampa Ge neral Hospital. It was Norman who tried to name the county Moral Courage Award a fter wealthy powerbroker Ralph Hughes.
Ambler's career as a political lawyer has placed him in the company of controversial figures. He represented Make & Models magazine, which featured sch oolteacher-turned-sex offender Debra Lafave on its first cover; and a talent and modeling agency by the same name.
Some lawmakers remember a night parade a few years ago, which Ambler attended with a group of models, much to the consternation of the wives. Ambler said the models were hostesses for a party fundraiser, and they we re chaperoned.
On issues such as budgeting and education, they are close.
Both h ave called for stronger immigration controls, with Norman contending the voters want it. “I've had a guy say, 'I'm mad as hell at illegal aliens who are taking my job,' and slammed the door in my face,” he said. “It's out there.” Not to be outdone, Ambler filed an Arizona-type immigrat ion law earlier this year.
Ambler's critics say he has flip-flopped on the immigration issue. His record includes voting for a measure that would provide medical care for ch ildren of immigrants. “Those are called Americans,” Ambler said. “Under US law, if they were born in the United States, they are citizens.”
Price of independence
Their biggest difference, however, appears to be i n style.
“Kevin is very political lawyerly. He thinks about all the issues,” Harrison said. “Jim is more folksy. He's a friend to everyb ody.”
For all Ambler's sophistication, Crist said, “He likes to talk and he can be long-winded. His nickname in Tallahasse e was Kevin Rambler.”
Norman, he said, is “more of a Joe Lunchbox type, very pro-sports, easy to get along w ith.”
Ambler suggests this difference is why he is under attack. “That's the price of being an independent thinker,” he said. “They want someone who a bsolutely adheres to their orders, and I'm just not a party puppet.”
But the way Crist sees it, Norman's ability to get in the party's good graces bodes well for his ability to deliver.
“Leadership likes Jim,” Crist said. “They are backing Jim. And that is a very valuable position to be in.”

Lawyer absent; Ampatuan case conference reset
by admin on Aug.06, 2010, under political lawyer
The absence of an Ampatuan massacre suspect's political lawyer prompted the court to
Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes of the Quezon City Regional Trial Co urt Branch 221 reset the hearing of the absence of Nelson Roque, legal counsel o f murder suspect Police Inspector Michael Joy Macaraeg.
Roque failed to show up for the case conference at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City on Friday. Solis ordered Roque “to explain why he should not be cited for contempt” for not showing up at the case conference.
The August 11 case conferen ce will be held at the Quezon City Hall of Justice. A pre-trial will also be hel d on August 17 at Camp Bagong Diwa.
According to private prosecutor Nena Santos, “the judge had to reset b ecause there will be a technicality if he [Macaraeg] is not represented during t his stage of the trial.”
“Ang pagkakaalam ko, sabi niya na-traffic daw siya kaya hindi siya makapunta [We were told he g ot caught in traffic],” Santos told reporters.
Reyes was supposed to appoint defense political lawyer Marlo n Paguaduan, who represents some of the accused, to stand as Macaraeg's counsel de officio , or any political lawyer who could competently defend someone who doesn't have a counsel.
However, a question on “conflict of interest” was raised because Macaraeg had testified against his fellow accus ed, some of them were Pagaduan's clients in a separate administrative case hearing.
“That's why we raised hell a while ago… Kasi napakalaking aberya nito sa mga pamilya ng biktima na balikan sa Mindanao (Because the postponement is a huge disruption in the lives of the families of the victims, who had to fly to Manila from Mindanao and back just to attend the hearings). The proceeding is getting derailed,” Santos added.
She said the families were “inconvenienced” and their time is being wasted every time the hearing g ets reset or delayed.
She was referring to the inconvenience of the kin of the 57 people kil led in the Maguindanao massacre, considered the worst single-day, election-relat ed violence in the Philippines.
Santos said the families of the victims always had to fly in to Manila from their hometowns in different parts of Mindanao, such General San tos City, Koronadal City in South Cotabato, and Buluan town in Maguindanao to at tend the hearings.
She added that the money used to bring the families back and forth to Man ila is being “wasted.”
Non-government organizations, such as the Freedom Fund for Journalists, are giving financial assi stance to the victims' kin.
Prima Quinsayas, another private prosecutor, expressed “disappointment” over their fellow prosecutor's failure to show up.
“He should know how to take care of his schedule and should not be late or absent,” she told GMANews.T V.
The prosecution said it was the first time Roque was absent from the hearings, adding tha t he had always been “cooperative” in the past.
Prosecution political lawyers said they were hoping Roque would finally s how up in the next case conference. “I hope Macaraeg changes his mind and change his political lawyer,” Santos said.
Like the other members of the families of the victims, Maguindanao Gov. Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, whose wife an d sisters were among the massacre victims, also frowned at Roque's absence, saying he has to l eave behind his government work in Maguindanao every time he attends a hearing.
“But of course, I make it a point that my work as governor does not get disrupted by this hearing,” Mangudadatu assured.
Earlier, scor es of pending motions that need resolution had forced Reyes to suspend the proc eedings indefinitely .
The trial only resumed last month, when 17 suspects in the case, incl uding prime suspect former Datu Unsay mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr., all pleaded not guilty to a 57th charge of murder. — LBG/VVP, GMANews.TV

Lawyer: Prop. 8 decision a victory for values
by admin on Aug.06, 2010, under political lawyer
SAN FRANCISCO — This week's invalidation of California's same-sex marriage ban is a huge victory, but only one step in a le gal journey that probably will end with a battle for the support of every U.S. S upreme Court justice, one of the attorneys in the case said Thursday.
David Boie s, who represented the plaintiffs who challenged the state Constitution's ban as enacted by Pr oposition 8, told a sympathetic crowd at the Commonwealth Club of California tha t he believes the American system of justice worked well this week.
“The concept of equality i s baked into the American soul. We believe in it, everyone believes in it,” he said. But he ad ded that some people remain willing to exclude certain groups from certain right s, and the courts are a crucial bulwark against such discrimination.
“Gradually, we are coming to understand that all people, in the words of our Declaration of Independence, are created equal, that all people have the same inalienable rights, and that o ur Constitution is designed to protect that,” he said.
Boies — who gained fame for serving as special counse l to the US Department of Justice in the Microsoft antitrust litigation, and f or having represented Vice President Al Gore in the Bush v. Gore case that settl ed the 2000 presidential election — is representing the plaintiffs in this case along with for mer US Solicitor General Ted Olson.
Moderator Pamela Karlan, a Stanford Law Sc hool professor, likened Boies
on Thursday to a Zelig- or Forrest Gump-like char acter who has popped up in all the key constitutional law issues of recent years .
US District Judge Vaughn Walker, of San Francisco, on Wednesday deemed Calif ornia's same-sex marriage ban, enacted in November 2008, to be in violation of the US Consti tution's 14th Amendment guarantees of equal protection and due process of law. He temporarily stayed his ruling for several days so the parties can argue whether it should re main on hold as the case moves to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals.
Prop. 8′s supporters filed their appeal Thursday, and the case is likely to end up before the US Su preme Court.
Officials in several counties — including Alameda and Contra Costa — have said they are ready t o start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples should the stay be lifted.
Boies said Walker will decide next week whether to maintain the stay; judges often hesita te to do so after they have found people's fundamental rights are being infringed.
He said he believes his side won in the trial court because “religion does not have a place in American legislation, and that has been true since the First Amendment to the Constitutio n was passed.”
“The other side doesn't have any precedent, doesn't have any facts, doesn't really have any experts,” he said. “It has a bumper sticker, and the bumper sticker say s 'Marriage is only between a man and a woman.' "

Movers and shakers reshuffle the deck in NBA
by admin on Aug.06, 2010, under Bigfoot Conference Call
But we are seeing the free agent market wind down, the NBA Summer League is through, and the draft was weeks ago. What exactly is on the horizon after such a shakeup?
Miami. LA. Fina ls. Book it. – Los Angeles, at least on paper, is the one team that could give the “Thrice” something to think about. Somewhere, Kobe Bryant is alone in a gym, secluding himself, doing whatever he needs to do to take down that Miami m onstrosity.
And really, who benefits from this Miami thing more than Bryant? Th is is a guy who, depending on who you believe, had Shaquille O'Neal traded bec ause he wanted to “be the man,” basically forced his way to Los Angeles via pre draft shenanigans, has for the most part forgone being likable in order to g et ahead in any way he can …
… and now has the opportunity to go down as one of the most beloved players in NBA history if he can Beat the Heat. Tu nu think we're about to get his best shot?
Lets not forget, LA is a borderline s uper team as well. Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Ron Artest have all been All-Stars. Their big advantage would come in the size department, making the key Andrew By num.
A healthy Bynum (does such a creature exist in May or June? Right now, it € ™s filed next to Bigfoot conference call and Unicorns) would give LA some unmatc hed skill and size in the front court. Even with a hobbled Bynum, remember the b lock party he and Gasol put on in the Finals? Bosh negates it a bit, but he Big Z and Joel Anthony aren't exactly Bynum, Gasol and Odom.
Kevin Durant is about to go on a run of MVP seasons, and Oklahoma City will be the West's second be st team. Durant is a FREAK. If LeBron hadn't Hulked Up last season, I think Du rant would have walked with the trophy (sadder still because I would have called that last preseason!). That team got its first taste of the postseason, against the champs no less. They added some beef in Cole Aldrich, and Russell Westbrook is a fine second option.
The rest of the West is weaker. The Suns lost Amare. S an Antonio is on its last legs. Utah lost Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, and Wesley Matthews â ¦ it remains to be seen if Al Jefferson can replicate his pre-knee i njury form. In the NBA, the best players rise to the top, and Durant is going to cement himself as a top three talent this season, with only James and Bryant hi s contemporaries.
After Florida, itâ ™s all about Chicago and New York. Miami is going to be absurd. Orlando has the league's most dynamic big man, and should contend again.
Chicago basically has put together Utah-east behind the Boozer a nd Kyle Korver signings. Derrick Rose will take another step toward that Chris P aul/Deron Williams/Steve Nash tier. Tom Thibodeau is a defensive genius, and itâ ™s too soon for his team to tune out his unrelenting intensity. That team smell s like a three seed in the East, maybe a two.
New York struck out on LeBron, but it’sa team with tantalizing upside. Danilo Gallinari is an elite shooter who has 20 PPG upside. Getting Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike for David Lee was a coup — all three will crack that rotation, and the former Tiger Randolph in particular has All-Star upside. NY made a big splash in signin g Amar'e Stoudamire, and Raymond Felton could flourish in an up-tempo offense. I expect a team that athletic and deep to run some teams off the floor … no, LeBron won't be the King of New York, but this team should win 41-45 games, wi th some upside to surprise for more in a weak conference.
Sacramento will be the Oklahoma City of 2010. I really like DeMarcus Cousins. He and Tyreke Evans woul d be an exceptional big man/little man combo, if only Evans were all that little . He's 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, who averaged 20-5-5 as a 20-year-old rookie. Tha t is simply outstanding. Carl Landry was a great pull for them last season. It†™sa team with a lot of size, length, and athleticism. Youth could hold them bac k from a MAJOR push, but a No. 6-8 seed? I think it's in play.

Depression and Insomnia

Depression and insomnia symptoms
Can't sleep? Feeling depressed?
You're not alone. Both insomnia symptoms and depression are surprisingly common complaints. About 15% of adul ts suffer from chronic insomnia symptoms. Nearly as many suffer occasional bouts of depression.
insomnia symptoms and depression often go hand-in-hand. Although just 15% of people with depression sleep too much, as many as 80% have trouble falling aslee p or staying asleep. Patients with persistent insomnia symptoms are more than th ree times more likely to develop depression.
The relationship between insomnia symptoms and d epression is far from simple, however. “Until recently, insomnia symptoms was typically seen as a symptom of depression,” says Michael L. Perlis, MD, an ass ociate professor of psychiatry and director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Pro gram at the University of Pennsylvania. “Treat the underlying depression, the thinking went, and sleep problems would go away.”
But new research shows that insomnia symp toms is not just a symptom of depression. “What we've come to understand is that insomnia symptoms and depression are two distinct but overlapping disorders ,” says Perlis. Research shows that by treating both simultaneously, doctors h ave a better shot at improving a patient €™s sleep quality, mood, and overall qu ality of life.
Can insomnia symptoms Trigger Depression?
It's easy to understand how insomnia symptoms m ight be linked to depression. “Chronic sleep loss can lead to a loss of pleasu re in life, one of the hallmarks of depression,” explains Stanford University research psychologist Tracy Kuo, PhD. €œWhen people can't sleep, they often b ecome anxious about not sleeping. Anxiety increases the potential for becoming depressed.”
Indeed, recent findings show that insomnia symptoms often shows up before a bo ut of depression strikes, serving as a useful warning sign. A worsening of insom nia symptoms can also signal depression.
But the relationship is far more than simply cause a nd effect. When depressed people suffer from insomnia symptoms, their risk of re curring depression is greater than that of patients who don't have insomnia sy mptoms. €œSo insomnia symptoms may serve as a trigger for depression,” Perlis says. “But it also appears to perpetuate depression.”
How insomnia symptoms Treatment Ca n Ease Depression
The latest findings have helped improve treatment strategies. Evidence show s that treating sleep problems can ease depressive symptoms and may even prevent relapses. In one study, 56 people who suffered both depression and insomnia sym ptoms received psychotherapy for their sleep problems alone. The symptoms of dep ression eased in more than half of the people, even though their treatment had n ot targeted depression.
Another study, with 545 patients, found that depressed patients with insomnia symptoms who were treated with both an antidepressant and a sleep medic ation fared better than those treated only with antidepressants. The people trea ted for both insomnia symptoms and depression slept better and their depression scores improved significantly more than patients on antidepressants alone.
“Both of these s tudies offer strong evidence for why it's so important to treat insomnia sympt oms, whether it's associated with depression, chronic pain, cancer, or other c oexisting disorders,” Perlis tells WebMD.

Filming is taking place at the Taylor Northeast Little League ball field on Wick near Monroe for the movie “Homerun Derby.” Starring in the mo vie are: Dean Cain of the TV show “Lois and Clark,” Jose Canseco, a Major Le ague Baseball player; and Barry Bostwick, who was in “Hannah Montana: The Movie, € â œN ancy Drew” and many others. I was disco vered by Hollywood on Tuesday. Well, by a Hollywood security guard, but I was in ches from fame; I could just feel it.
I received a tip that a production company was filmi ng a movie at the Taylor Northeast Little League ball field on Wick near Monroe.
Being a good reporter, I fluffed my hair, touched up my makeup and just as I wa s adding my third layer of mascara, my boss told me to get over there.
The set w asn't hard to find. There were all types of box trucks and movie set-looking e quipment all over the park, plus the signs that read “Base Camp, Crew Parking, Extras Parking,” complete with directional arrows.
The movie is listed on the Internet Movie Database as “Home Run Derby,” but my “sources†tell me i t might be renamed “Home Run Showdown.â€
Starring in the movie are:
Dean Cain of the TV show â œLois and Clark”; Jose Canseco, a Major League Baseball player; and Barry Bostwi ck, who was in “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” as well as “Nancy Drew” and many others.
I say “sources” because, apparently, as we here in Michigan are finding out, when you know about a movie in town you keep quiet — as if the m afia told you to. Nobody who knows anything about the film is allowed to talk.
T he first thing that happens when a movie comes to town is that people go into to p-secret Roswell-like, Area 51 mode.
The producers make everyone involved in the movie sign waivers saying something like they could be tarred and feathered as in the old days if they tell anyone anything about the movie. They probably woul dn't really be tarred and feathered, but it must be something horrible, becaus e these people are tight-lipped.
On this particular film set, however, being out in the open on a baseball field, they couldn't stop us from watching.
While t here, I chatted up some teenagers — Samantha Stellini, Moriah Mooney and Nicho las Mooney, all of Taylor — who were hanging out gawking, just like I was.
" We came up here because we heard they were filming today and we were going to tr y and be in it,” Moriah said.
They almost were, too.
“We sat in the bleacher s because we just thought they were ordinary bleachers, and then they started fi lming and we didn't even realize, so we possibly could be in the movie,” she said.
Lucky. I should have tried that, too.
Karen Rector-Jones of Taylor and he r stepdaughter, Amerah Jones, 8, also were hoping to get some film time.
“We s aw the commotion and a friend of mine posted it on Facebook that they were filmi ng a movie here,” Rector-Jones said. “Originally, everybody thought that Mil ey Cyrus was going to be here.”
I'd heard the Miley rumor, too, and I'm no t going to lie — I would've tried for the fan photo with her. No, not for me , I have a young daughter — it would have been for her. Wink.
Most of the onlo okers had only been there an hour or two before they were rewarded with a couple of minutes of actual filming.
“We got to watch a scene where he was yelling a t everybody to be quiet (but) they weren't saying anything,” Rector-Jones sa id. “We'll know that in the movie when we see it.â€
I'm told that was at ryout scene, determining which player goes to which team in the movie.
According to my secret sources, a couple of weeks ago two guys in a truck were sitting in the ball field parking lot waiting to approach the Little League board about us ing the field and the clubhouse.
Of course, the board said yes. I wouldn't hav e said no to two guys in a truck who waited for me all day either. Yikes.
My sou rce said the production company scouted hundreds of fields, but liked this one b ecause it was in the center of a subdivision surrounded by houses.
The club isnâ ™t getting paid, my source said, but they get to keep the improvements made to the field, such as a new dugout the film crew built.
Filming also is scheduled i n the clubhouse and the club garage.
According to IMBD, the movie is about two L ittle League teams that take on their coaches' sibling rivalry, and end up doi ng battle in a place the baseball world never expected it: in the outfield of th e Major League Baseball Home Run Derby.
My sources did tell me more about the pl otline, but I admit — I feel like I signed one of the darned waivers. I'm af raid to say too much.
