But Daryl Colyer isn't your average Bigfoot conference call enthusiast.
He's a Bigfoot conference call investigator and vice-chairman of a non-profit organization called the Texas Bigfoot conference call Research Conservancy.
On Saturday, the 10th Annual Bigfoot conference call Conference was held in Tyler.
Apparently East Texas is a hotspot for Bigfoot conference call sightings.
“East Texas is the part of Texas where most of the reported sightings come from. In fact, I would say as many as 90% of the reported sightings that we deem to be possibly legitimate reports are from East Texas,” Colyer said.
Jack Wheeler and his friends attended Saturday's conference – they all believe “Bigfoot conference call” exists – they just aren't sure what one might really look like.
“I think there's definitely something out there, I don't know if it's like a big huge hairy thing that attacks people, but there's probably something out there,” Wheeler said.
“Out there” according to Daryl Colyer is 65 million acres of timberland in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. That's roughly the size of the state of Oregon. Plenty of places for the nocturnal primates to hide, Colyer says.
“It's a big world, and you know we're pretty much stuck in the cities and the interstate highways. There's a lot of timber out there,” Colyer said.
And to Colyer, skepticism about Bigfoot conference call is not only expected, it's a good thing.
“Have that skepticism, but have an open mind. Question it, look into it for yourself,” Colyer said.

MONDAY Q&A: Investigator takes spirited approach to ghost hunting
by admin on Oct.28, 2010, under Bigfoot Conference Call
Answer : I worked in admissions. One night, as I was walking to a vending machine downstairs, I saw a person go from left to right ahead of me in the hallway. This was right after I was hired, and I thought it was another worker. I walked down to the end of the hallway and there was a solid wall — there wasn't even a door they could've walked through. And after I mentioned this, other staff said, well, everybody that's new has seen things.
A security guard told me about going into an unoccupied building one night when he was making his rounds, and a basketball rolled off a ramp. And nobody was there. The guard swears to seeing it.
In another building, one of the nurses had gone home for the weekend and a patient left for a visit, and when the nurse came back in Monday, he walked past the patient's room and saw her sitting in a wheelchair. He was wondering why she came back early. He told someone, “Oh, I see so-and-so's back.” They said, “Well, no, she died while she was on her visit.” They went back to the room and there was an empty wheelchair.
But at the time I worked there, I wasn't even thinking about doing any type of investigating. It was interesting, what happened, and I put it in the back of my mind — that's as far as it went.
Question : But these kinds of activities maybe piqued your interest in the paranormal?
Question : Speaking of shows on television, like “Ghost Hunters” — I assume you rely on scientific methods and you use instruments like they do, and you try to find logical explanations for claims of paranormal activity as they do.
Answer: We go in and try to provide natural explanations. Like, what causes knocking? A tree branch on the house? You hear a scratching, is that an animal in the attic, a squirrel or something? Doors slamming — is there a draft somewhere? Is there a plausible explanation?
We have instruments that detect electromagnetic fields, we carry a K2 meter, which lights up whenever there's a higher field of energy present — those are indications of increased activity. We actually have proof — we have it on film — where we've asked yes and no questions and they've been answered with one flash or two flashes, almost like an intelligence. We have tape recorders for EVP (electronic voice phenomena) sessions — that's a voice that you don't hear when you ask a question, but you hear it on playback. And we use thermal cameras, which pick up hot areas, heat signatures.
Question: Can you tell me about WPI's first investigation?
Answer: It was a business in Westmoreland County. The people there thought it was haunted by a former trustee — they thought he was just there watching over things. They'd seen apparitions of him. Vehicles that were housed at the business, the doors were opening and closing by themselves. They heard footsteps and noises. A locked office door was found open. Stereos come on by themselves. We've actually gone in there several times because they've had increased activity. Sometimes it'll go for months without anything, then things will start happening again.
We've had EVPs of heavy breathing after we've asked some questions and it wasn't any of the investigators. One session we were using a thermal camera — one investigator was sitting on the couch and there was a hot spot beside him. And at the same time the K2 meter was lighting up — we were asking questions. And he felt the hair on his arms standing up. This all happened at the same time. We couldn't explain why there were warm spots on the couch, because there was nobody else sitting there.
We also had an investigator who was leaving the room, just out of camera range, ready to go down the steps, and he had a tape recorder in the palm of his hand — he was asking questions. And the tape recorder was knocked out of his hand. It flew out, the cassette dropped straight down to his feet and the tape recorder landed a couple steps below him. Now the other guy that saw this happen said the investigator didn't even reach for it — like when you go to drop something, you try to grab it. He was so surprised he didn't even make a move. He was dumbfounded. His eyes just looked at his hand outstretched.
We've had K2 meter responses to our questions — again, the lights light up whenever energy's detected. Also, a flashlight came on by itself. It was about 10 feet away from the investigators. And it just turned on and off.
The place has an upstairs to it and we had a camera set up there with a K2 meter. And I have this on video — we were upstairs for like an hour and everybody left the room and it showed 15 minutes of nobody being in the room. And as we're coming back up the steps, you could hear footsteps and the K2 meter stated to light up — it was going crazy. It wasn'ta vibration, because we went back down the steps later and tried jumping up and down to see if it was the weight of people coming up that caused a vibration. But there was no vibration. It was almost like something knew that we were coming up the steps — they were either excited or thought, oh, no, here they come again, one of those deals. I don't know why it happened.
Question : Have you ever conducted an investigation in Indiana County?
Answer: No, but we'd like to. It would really be nice to get a call from someone there. We go more or less where we're invited. “Joe X” says, “Oh, yeah, I saw something in my house or in my business, would you come out here?” Then we'd be more than happy. They can contact us at wpigroup@gmail.com .
Question: Do you know of any haunted sites in Indiana County?
Answer: The Jimmy Stewart Museum is said to be haunted by the spirit of Jimmy Stewart. I don't know much about it. The IUP campus reportedly has haunted sites — I'm not sure which buildings. There's reportedly a ghost of a child that drowned in a pool there. There's a bridge called Allen Bridge — reportedly a ghost of a lady in white has been seen there. And I've heard that a female in maybe 18th century clothing has been seen in Oakland Cemetery.
Question: Can you talk about some other reportedly haunted sites in Westmoreland County?
Answer : There are a lot of stories about Saint Vincent College, about the dorm rooms. Mostly the students are seeing things. The founder, Boniface Wimmer, he's been seen sometimes walking the grounds.
Seton Hill University, they have a chapel there and a nun has been seen walking around the chapel and then she disappears. I heard about a fellow that was playing the organ for a wedding and he went up there to rehearse. He said later that he saw a nun walk up the aisle and he looked back seconds later and she was gone. There's nowhere she could have gone. And there's been nuns seen in the cemetery at night, which is kind of odd.
Question: Apart from the aforementioned business in Westmoreland County, any other interesting places you've investigated?
Answer: We've done some private homes. One of the residences, toys are turning on without batteries, at night there are noises, they've had a crucifix disappear off the wall. Another place, a private residence, again there are toys turned on with the batteries removed — I don't know why that's such a popular thing. One of the children there saw a vision of a recently deceased relative walking right past the kid and go into the basement. There's also a fire hall in Westmoreland County where one of their former members, who was a smoker, would always hide out there smoking because his wife wouldn't let him smoke at home. He passed away, but the current members keep smelling cigarette smoke in the bays or they see shadows in the bays. They think he's come back to visit.
There was a business in Murrysville — an office where a suicide had occurred. Ever since then the employees have seen shadows, they've heard doors slamming, heard voices. One morning a worker came into the conference room and all the chairs were moved against the wall and the coffee pots were smashed on the floor. But all the doors had been locked and the burglar alarms were set. They don't know how anybody got in and did that.
Question: What's your dream investigation? If you could go anywhere to investigate, where would you like to go?
Answer: I'd like to get to Gettysburg and do some investigation there. There's supposed to be some really good hot spots. Waverly Hills Sanitarium, in Kentucky. It seems like everybody that goes there has a lot of experiences. And maybe Moundsville Penitentiary in West Virginia.
Question: Lots of people watch “Ghost Hunters” and related shows and many believe in the paranormal. But there are skeptics, too. What do say to them?
Answer : Well, I'ma skeptic, too. Nothing's been proved to me. I've never seen a Bigfoot conference call, I've never seen a UFO, I've never seen a ghost. But I know when you have results — the K2 meter lights up or you have EVPs or you get direct answers to direct questions — well, you know there's something strange going on. But the word “paranormal” just means it's not normal. It's unknown. No one so far has proved anything.

MONDAY Q&A: Investigator takes spirited approach to ghost hunting
by admin on Oct.26, 2010, under Bigfoot Conference Call
