Tokyo Police Club's latest album, “Champ,” features a song called “Breakneck Speed.” And that's pretty much the pace that the members have been going.

The ba nd formed in 2005 in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto). A year later the y released an EP called “A Lesson in Crime,” a mere 16 minutes that received lots of positive press from cri tics.

The band's first full-length album, “Elephant Shell,” came out in 2008, and they currently are touring in support of “Champ,” which was released in June. Rolling Stone magazine has said the album “fuses light-speed guitars with ebullien t melodies.”

Tokyo Police Club members – Greg Alsop (drums), Josh Hook (guitar), David Monks (vocals, bass ) and Graham Wright (keys/percussion) – are in their mid-20s but have already logged tour stop s in Japan, Australia, Brazil and beyond. The band, which has been likened to th e Strokes and Coldplay, recently returned from a tour of Europe and will perform Friday at the Castle Theatre in Bloomington.

Ahead of the concert, we connect ed with Wright by telephone to talk about the hectic tour schedule, the naming o f “Champ” and the members' fondness for furry friends.

Where are you at today?

I'm in Toronto. We're back for three days before we head out on the road again.

What are you doing with your short break?

B asically just seeing as many of my friends as I can cram into a three-day period .

How was your tour?

We did the first two weeks in the UK, then we took a br ief detour to Jakarta, Indonesia, then back to Europe – five days in Germany, then Paris, Brus sels and Luxembourg.

Would you say members of TPC are dog lovers? I noticed a dog in one of your press shots, and dogs are the stars of your video for “Wait Up” (which features a pack of dogs jumping into a swimming pool).

We absolutely are. It kind of happened o rganically. After we picked out the title (of the album), someone pointed out th at it sounded like a dog's name. We were about to take some pictures, and we asked the photogr apher if she had a dog or could bring one. Miraculously, she managed to find the perfect dog in about four hours. We bought some red fabric and tied a bandana a round its neck.

Were you present for the filming of the pool scene?

No, and that's a sore subject. We were on tour, but it's probably the only dog pool party that we'd ever get to attend.

Why did you name the album “Champ”?

The name itself came out of desperation, as a lot of our decisions seem to.

What's pretty odd album about making records is that they have to start publicizing it way bef ore you put out the record. We hadn't been thinking about titles or anything, then one day we needed one. We had a bunch of ideas but no one could agree on them. We would go to a bookstore and get dictionaries and pick words at random. We'd even combine the words to m ake phrases and that yielded almost nothing. Then Greg took 'champ' out of the dictionary and it worked.

H ow does a band take it to the next step – go from playing in a garage or a basement to being i n front of crowds?

7:45pm During the commercial break a ton of seat fillers are brought towards the front of the theater as many of the celeb presenters and performers have long since left. An announcer comes on and tells the artist of the year nominees they are running out time and be sure to watch the teleprompte r for how much time they have. Seems kind of rude since this is the main award o f the night!

7:44pm While Usher accepts his award crews are rolling in equipment behind him from backstage. Fortunately, the camera he is speaking on never catc hes this but it's super distracting to the crowd.

7:04pm I was just on the set of “Castle” on Monday and I can guarantee those are hair extensions Stana Katic is sporting tonight. Sh e does look sexy though. The anti-detective Kate Beckett for sure.

6:49pm It's snowing in LA! Well only if you are on the stage or the first ten rows of the Nokia Theater. With those bangs and he r hair pulled back Taylor Swift looks just like a young Faith Hill .

6:35pm Pregn ant Pink is killing this high-energy performance of “Raise Your Glass.” Now I feel like a total complainer s ince I can barely drag my pregnant butt of the couch! During the commercial brea k the crowd in front of the stage spends the time either popping the balloons th at rained down or punching them around like beach balls. Biebs poses for a photo with a kid who from my seat I think is Jaden Smith .

6:31pm Clearly the other no minees in the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist Award knew they stood no chance again st Justin Bieber . Did Biebs really just say, “I came from the smallest town in the world… 30 thousand people .” LOL!! Not exactly the definition of a small town kiddo but thanks for the laugh.

6:30pm Hal f way through the show and I realize a pregnant chick should have brought snacks ! I wonder where Pink is. I bet she's got some in her dressing room.

6:15pm Announcer during t he commercial break tells the crowd Bon Jovi is about to take the stage and sing their greatest hits. I remark to my seatmates, “Totally worth the drive here!” Showing my age here but I lo ve me some Bon Jovi!!!! When they take the stage the crowd begins to get on thei r feet until they realize we have to sit through a new, slow song before we get to the good stuff. They sit back down. As soon as the oldie begins to play the c rowd is back on their feet and this time even Pat Sajak is standing. Love the cu t away of Jenny McCarthy rocking out during “It's My Life.” Like me, she grew up in the 80′s Bon Jovi era.

6:07pm Did anyone tell Justin Bieber his gold topped microphone clashes with his metallic ski boot looking si lver sneaker? Ah, the little girls won't care anyway.

6:04pm Someone should have told Nicki Me naj its not polite to shout out your own albums street date when you are announc ing an award to someone who actually deserves it.

6:00pm Looking at Katy Perry 's red dress you just know she is going to rip it off at some point during this performance. I'm just glad she didn't sing “Teenage Dream” with that boys choir!

5:49pm The Black Eye Peas are announced and before a single note even h its, the crowd is on their feet anticipating what is always a dance worthy, get on your feet performance. Ok, is Fergie wearing the ultimate push up bra or what ?!!!

5:41pm. Commercial break and Rihanna sporting a different outfit than she p erformed in is escorted to her front row seat. Even though she's twenty seats in front of me h er red curls make her unmistakable!

5:39pm While Kid Rock sings, a group of peop le in the audience try to start clapping along. Eventually they all realize they are off beat and stop (thank goodness!). A beautiful song with a beautiful mess age does not need crappy clapping. The crowd gives Kid a well-deserved standing ovation.

5:26pm During the commercial breaks the announcer tells the crowd insid e the Nokia that Justin Bieber has won favorite pop/rock album. Deafening scream s from young girls come from the nosebleed seats.

5:25pm The other half of the s tage is unveiled and its Miley Cyrus singing a ballad. No standing ovation after her performance but just as the show goes to commercial break her mom Tish stan ds up from her aisle seat as a few people around her congratulate her on Miley's Performance.

5:20 Half of the stage is covered while Enrique Iglesias performs. The crowd is on its feet with the exception of it seems one guy… “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak who is sitting directly across from ฉัน! I guess he's not an Enrique fan.

Favorite Pop/Rock album. Girls in the nosebleeds scream.

5:00 Rihanna starts the show. Her earrings are so huge I can actually see them f rom my seat (which are awesome!). Those legs! ว้าว! The crowd gives her a much de served standing ovation for that knock-out performance.

4:50 Ke$ha arri ves sporting a bizarro messy mohawk and blue lips. Her dress looks like some rip ped a few trash bags and sewed them on. She trips heading up to our Access Holly wood platform and exclaims “My boobs are gonna fall out!” While the dress I don't like I do enjoy the eyebrow jewelry. Tre ndy, yet new and different.

4:46pm Diddy comes blazing through the crowd ignorin g everyone as he makes a beeline for our Access Hollywood platform. His red carp et accessory includes two ladies dressed in blue.

4:43pm An almost unrecognizabl e Julianne Hough walks right by me sporting a red 40′s style hairdo. She's wearing a black strapless sequine d mermaid dress that looks more Oscars than AMAs. Seems way too fancy for the oc casion.

4:40pm “Modern Family's” Eric Stonestreet arrives wearing a black jacket that seems to be sporting a western theme . It's an pretty odd album choice.

4:38pm Katy Perry looks pretty in pink sequins. Now that sh e is a married lady I would have expected a huge diamond sparkler and band on he r finger. Instead she wears what looks like a simple pave band.

4:35pm Just arri ved to the red carpet at the 2010 American Music Awards. Jada Pinkett Smith look ing lovely in all gold, leans down to fix daughter Willow's outfit. Seems the cuff on her pant s keep falling down. Gotta love a mom who helps her daughter out with a red carp et wardrobe malfunction.

Pomegranates drummer Jacob Merritt describes the band's mindset
during the writing of One
of Us (the Cincinnati band's third and perhaps best album) as “patient,”
it seems like an pretty odd album state for the popular quart et. Patience has
not been a particular concern for the Pomegranates since they
ssembled a mere four years ago.

all, this is the band that wrote its first song at its first
practice, self-released a debut EP six months later and signe d with
Lujo Records two weeks after that. With the band's debut
full-length, 2 008's Everything Is Alive ,
and its follow-up, 2009's acclaimed Everybody,
Co me Outside! ,
both reflecting the members' collective love of Talking Heads and
Brian Eno (and shades of Sparklehorse, The French Kicks and the
Zombies), the P oms weren't waiting for songs to happen.

But with One of Us ,
the band's debu t for Afternoon Records, the band members were
clearly ready to let their materi al brew a little bit longer.

“It
seemed like we were willing to take an idea a nd let it develop over
the course of an entire song, as opposed to jamming a bun ch of ideas
into the same song,” Merritt says from his Northside home. “We
s till do that to some degree, of course, but we're a little more
patient and le t things unfold a little bit longer in a song.”

At
the same time, the Poms wer en't about to allow their new sense of
deliberation to interfere with their al bum-a-year pace. Just because
they were letting their songs percolate a bit long er doesn't mean
they copped Axl Rose's inexorable process.

“It
didn't se em to make things take any longer,” Merritt notes. “Once
we had an idea, we would let it do its thing. It was just finding
ideas that we preferred to other ones, versus in the past when we
would try to think of tons of ideas.”

Whateve r the process, it seems to have paid off. One of Us came out late last month and shot to No. 7 on CMJ ’s
Top 200, placing just behind the new Arcade Fire and a head of albums
by Ben Folds, Weezer and Neil Young. The album has also scored so ฉัน
glowing reviews, including a praiseful 7-out-of-10 review from Spin .

churning out an album annually, Merritt in sists it's not by design.
The foursome — Merritt, multi-instrumentalists Joe y Cook and Isaac
Karns and new guitarist/vocalist Dan Lyon — are simply that
p rolific.

“We
have a hard time keeping ourselves from writing,” Merritt says. “We
get really restless. If someone just randomly has a little guitar
hook or drum beat or a synth pad or something at practice and they
play it for 30 secon ds, pretty odd albums are someone else is going to play along
with it. Then it € ™s like, 'Oh no, we're writing a song.'”

Poms were already well into the writing process for One
of Us when guitarist Josh Kufeldt left to form his own band, Sacred
Spirits. Merritt points out that Kufeldt and the band simply ca me to
a creative crossroads, with the band and their friend and guitarist
going in distinctly different directions.

“Josh and us were on a different page
crea tively,â Merritt says. “In order to make sure we could stay
friends and all do what we were excited about doing, it just made
sense for us to go our separat e ways. It's good because we're
still friends, and we hang out. (Sacred Spir its) has a new album
coming out soon, and it's awesome. Josh is an extremely g ood guitar
player and musician and songwriter.”

was a natural fit to repl ace Kufeldt. He had tried out for a position
as the fifth Pomegranate but opted not to join at the time. The Poms
had contacted Lyon again with the idea of work ing him in as an
auxiliary member but Kufeldt's departure changed the plan.

€ œWe
were going to find a way for Dan to be the fifth member and then
things unfo lded with Josh leaving,” Merritt says. “So he stepped
in as the fourth membe r instead of the fifth.”

Kufeldt's exit and Lyon's arrival, the Poms decided to scrap some
of the material that was already written, giving Lyon an o pportunity
to write with the group. On the songs that Kufeldt had input on, Lyon
just rewrote the guitar parts to reflect his own style.

“It's
just a differ ent type of playing,” Merritt says of Lyon's
contributions. “He likes idea s that are bit more simple, which is
fine with us. I think the new album still f eels like the
Pomegranates, but I think we're all a little bit more into textu res
and layers. To us, this album feels a little bit more ambient and
washy and maybe a little more accessible, in a sense.”

Merritt
contends that the Pomegra nates were guided by slightly different
voices on One of Us (recorded at Ric Hor dinski's Monastery Studio and co-produced by
the band and Aloha's TJ Lipple) , although the sonic foundation
remains largely the same. Between the four-year span since its
formation and Lyon's addition, evolution is inevitable.

“The
epic songs on the album are more dancey or droney, so bands like
Liquid Liquid o r !!! or Deerhunter seem to be more prevalent in our
palette,” Merritt says. â œAnd Dan's a fan of bands like T. Rex,
so the guitar hooks and keyboard stuff feels a little more prevalent
on this album. In a lot of ways, this feels like our first album.
It’s the first album where every single song everybody is exc ited
about, and it seems like this is the first one where we had a pretty
good i dea of what we were trying to do and we were able to do it, for
better or worse. "
